Since 1960, Banaji & Associates has believed that great design isn’t about grand gestures. It’s about the quiet details that make a space feel like home. Across six decades and two generations, that belief has never changed, only deepened. Here are four ideas that continue to shape the way we design.
-
Function comes before flourish.
A beautiful room that doesn’t work for the people in it isn’t a resolved room. Before a single material or finish is chosen, we ask how a space will actually be used, at 7 a.m., at midnight, on an ordinary Tuesday. Function isn’t the constraint on design. It is the starting point of it. -
Restraint is a form of respect.
Not every corner needs to compete for attention. We believe elegance comes from knowing what to leave quiet, so that the details which matter most are the ones that are actually seen. A home doesn’t need to say everything at once to say something meaningful. -
Materials should age with a family, not against it.
We choose materials for how they will feel and perform years from now, not only for how they photograph on day one. Warm wood, honest stone, and considered finishes are selected because they live well, wearing in rather than wearing out. -
A home should hold more than one story.
Families are not singular. Different generations, routines, and personalities share the same walls. Our role is to design spaces flexible enough to hold all of it, individuality within one cohesive, considered whole.
These four ideas aren’t a formula. They are a discipline, one we return to on every project, whether it’s a single study or an entire residence. Because for us, design intellect was never about making a space look complete. It’s about making it feel inevitable for the people who live there.
That’s the story every Banaji & Associates home is quietly telling, one corner at a time
